Stephania rotunda
(Bình vôi – Bing wei)
Introduction
Stephania rotunda also known as Stephania rotunda Lour., belongs to the Menispermaceae family and is a perennial climbing plant commonly found in limestone mountainous regions of Vietnam (Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Lang Son) and other Asian countries, including India, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and China. The tuberous root is the primary medicinal part, typically harvested year-round, washed, peeled, sliced, dried, or used for extracting active compounds. In traditional medicine, it is characterized by a bitter taste, cool nature, and acts on the Liver and Spleen meridians, with sedative, lung-clearing, pain-relieving properties, and support for treating insomnia, nervous debility, and digestive disorders.
