Radix Auclandiae
(Mộc Hương – Mu xiang)

Introduction

Radix Auclandiae scientifically known as Saussurea lappa (Decne.) C.B. Clarke or Saussurea costus, belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, primarily cultivated in high mountainous regions such as Northwest Vietnam (Lào Cai, Hà Giang), India, and China. The root of Costus root is the main part used medicinally, typically harvested in autumn or winter from 2-3-year-old plants, then dried or processed into powder, paste, or extract. In traditional medicine, Costus root has a spicy, bitter taste, warm nature, and enters the spleen, stomach, large intestine, and triple burner meridians, with functions to promote qi flow, strengthen the spleen, aid digestion, and relieve pain. It is considered a key herb in therapies for digestion, abdominal pain relief, and regulating qi and blood circulation.
