Rhizoma Curcuma Caesia
(E Zhu-Curcuma Rhizome)
Introduction
Black Turmeric Root Powder, derived from the rhizome of Curcuma caesia Roxb. (family Zingiberaceae), is a rare and less common medicinal product compared to yellow or red turmeric in Vietnam. Black turmeric is primarily cultivated in highland areas such as Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La, and parts of the Central Highlands like Kon Tum and Gia Lai, where the cool climate, humus-rich basalt or forest soil, and good drainage create favorable conditions. The plant is sown in spring and harvested after 8–10 months when the rhizomes mature, then cleaned, dried, and ground into a fine powder with a distinctive grayish-green hue.
Black turmeric powder contains active compounds such as curcumin, flavonoids, and essential oils, offering a unique aroma and numerous health benefits. In traditional Vietnamese medicine, black turmeric is considered bitter and warm, promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, aiding digestion, and breaking blood stasis. It is commonly used to treat menstrual pain, irregular menstruation, bloating, stomach pain, or to support postpartum recovery. Black turmeric is also employed in folk remedies to reduce inflammation, heal wounds, and support liver and kidney health. Among ethnic minority communities, it is used in rituals and as a natural dye.
