Rhzizoma Curcuma Zedoaria

Introduction

White Turmeric Root Powder, derived from the rhizome of Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe (family Zingiberaceae), is a unique medicinal and culinary product in Vietnam. White turmeric is primarily cultivated in mountainous provinces such as Lang Son, Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, and some lowland areas like Thai Binh and Nam Dinh, where loose, humus-rich soil and a humid tropical climate provide ideal conditions. The plant is sown in spring and harvested after 8–10 months when the rhizomes mature, then cleaned, dried, and ground into a fine powder with an off-white or pale yellow hue.

White turmeric powder contains compounds such as curcuminoids, zedoarin, and essential oils, offering a mild aroma and a bitter, spicy taste. In traditional Vietnamese medicine, white turmeric is considered cooling and bitter, with properties that clear heat, reduce inflammation, aid digestion, and detoxify the body. It is commonly used to treat abdominal pain, bloating, sore throat, boils, or to support stomach and liver health. The powder is also employed in beauty remedies, such as face masks to brighten skin, reduce dark spots, and provide antibacterial benefits.
