Introduction


Radix Polygoni Multiflori also known as “Red Fo-ti” or “He Shou Wu”, is a medicinal herb belonging to the Polygonaceae family. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine in Vietnam, China, and other East Asian countries. The tuberous root is the primary part used, often processed (steamed with black beans) to enhance its pharmacological effects.

In traditional medicine, Polygonum multiflorum is considered warm in nature, with bitter, sweet, and astringent flavors. It primarily acts on the Liver and Kidney meridians, with benefits including blood nourishment, liver tonification, strengthening tendons and bones, and darkening hair.
