Rhizoma Homalomenae
(Qian Nian Jian-Homalomena Rhizome)

Introduction

Homalomena (Homalomena occulta (Lour.) Schott), a member of the Araceae family, is a perennial herbaceous plant characterized by its thick, aromatic rhizomes and heart-shaped leaves. The plant is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, particularly in northern and central Vietnam (Quảng Ninh, Nghệ An, and Hà Tĩnh provinces). Homalomena thrives in humid tropical climates, growing optimally at elevations of 100–1,200 m on feralitic or loose, nutrient-rich alluvial soils with good drainage.

In traditional medicine, the rhizomes of Homalomena are utilized for their essential oil and alkaloid content, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and circulation-enhancing properties. In Vietnam, Homalomena is commonly used in folk remedies to treat joint pain, numbness in the limbs, and fatigue associated with rheumatism. A decoction or alcohol infusion of the rhizomes is applied topically or consumed to alleviate pain and strengthen musculoskeletal health.
