Radix Codonopsis
(Dang Shen-Codonopsis Root)
Introduction
Radix Codonopsis scientifically designated as Codonopsis pilosula (Family: Campanulaceae), is a highly valued medicinal herb in Vietnamese traditional medicine. The root, characterized by its sweet flavor and neutral thermal nature, is attributed to the Spleen and Lung meridians. It is renowned for its therapeutic effects, including tonifying the middle burner, augmenting qi, fortifying the spleen, nourishing blood, and promoting the generation of body fluids.
Predominantly found in high-altitude mountainous regions such as Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Lang Son, Codonopsis is utilized in the management of conditions such as general debility, fatigue, poor appetite, anemia, and respiratory disorders, including dry cough and dyspnea. In contemporary pharmacological studies, Codonopsis has been shown to contain bioactive constituents such as saponins and polysaccharides, which exhibit immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties.
