Herba Menthae
(Bo He-Chinese Mint)
Introduction
Mint (Herba Menthae), scientifically known as Mentha arvensis L. or Mentha piperita L., belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is a perennial herbaceous plant widely cultivated in Vietnam. It grows wild in highland areas such as Sa Pa (Lào Cai), Tam Đảo (Vĩnh Phúc), and Ba Vì (Hà Nội) and is extensively grown in Red River Delta provinces like Hưng Yên and Hà Nội for its leaves and essential oil. Mint thrives in loose, humus-rich, moist soil, typically planted in spring or autumn and harvested when the plant begins to flower.
Mint contains essential oil (1-3%), primarily menthol and menthone, giving it a distinctive cool, refreshing aroma. In traditional Vietnamese medicine, mint has a spicy, cooling nature, with effects including fever reduction, sweat induction, pain relief, antibacterial properties, digestive support, and treatment for colds, headaches, nasal congestion, sore throat, stomachaches, and bloating. Mint essential oil is used as an antiseptic, for massaging to relieve joint or temple pain, and as a fragrance in toothpaste, candy, and shampoo production. Additionally, mint is used as a spice, brewed in tea, repels insects, promotes relaxation, and effectively deodorizes.
