Herba Phyllanthi Urinariae
(Ye Xia Zhu-Leafflower)

Introduction

Chamberbitter (Phyllanthus urinaria L.), a member of the Phyllanthaceae family, is an annual herbaceous plant characterized by its slender stems, neatly arranged leaves, and small fruits positioned beneath the leaves. The plant is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, particularly in northern and southern Vietnam (Đong nai, An Giang, and Thanh Hoa provinces). Chamberbitter thrives in humid tropical climates, growing optimally at elevations of 0–800 m on alluvial, sandy loam, or loose feralitic soils with good drainage.

In traditional medicine, the entire Chamberbitter plant is utilized for its flavonoid, alkaloid, and lignan content, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and diuretic properties. In Vietnam, Chamberbitter is commonly used in folk remedies to support the treatment of hepatitis, jaundice, and kidney stones. A decoction of the plant aids in clearing heat, detoxifying the liver, and alleviating pain associated with urinary tract inflammation.
