Herba Schizonepetae
(Jing Jie-Schizonepeta)

Introduction

Vietnamese mint (Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyl.), a member of the Lamiaceae family, is an annual herbaceous plant characterized by its pleasant aroma and finely hairy leaves. The plant is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, particularly in northern Vietnam (Thái Nguyên, Bắc Giang, and Phú Thọ provinces). Vietnamese mint thrives in temperate to subtropical climates, growing optimally at elevations of 100–1,200 m on alluvial or feralitic soils with good porosity and drainage.

In traditional medicine, the entire plant, especially the leaves and tops, is utilized due to its essential oil rich in elsholtzia ketone, which exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. In Vietnam, Vietnamese mint is commonly used in folk remedies to treat influenza, headaches, and allergic rashes. A decoction of the plant is employed to reduce fever, while steam inhalation with Vietnamese mint helps relieve nasal congestion and sore throat. Proper dosage is essential to avoid skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
