Radix Platycodi
(Jie Geng-Platycodon Root)
Introduction
Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A.DC.), a member of the Campanulaceae family, is a perennial herbaceous plant characterized by its thick, tuberous roots and bell-shaped purple or white flowers. The plant is distributed across Southeast Asia, particularly in northern Vietnam (Lạng Sơn, Bắc Kạn, and Thái Nguyên provinces). Balloon flower thrives in cool temperate climates, growing optimally at elevations of 300–1,500 m on loose feralitic or nutrient-rich alluvial soils with good drainage.
In traditional medicine, the roots of balloon flower are utilized for their saponin (platycodin) and polysaccharide content, which exhibit expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and respiratory-supporting properties. In Vietnam, balloon flower is commonly used in folk remedies to treat coughs, sore throats, and bronchitis. A decoction of the roots helps thin phlegm and alleviate throat irritation.
